Camille Edwards the Mentee

Camille Edwards has always believed in the benefits of having great mentors for guidance. She learned at the beginning stages of her career the importance of surrounding yourself with people willing to support you.

As ayoung producer, Camille Edwards aspired to be a news director. At that time—and, unfortunately, to this very day—there are very few women of color running big newsrooms.

Camille met Paula Madison, the News Director at WNBC-TV in New York at the time. Paula happened to be the only black woman in that role in a top market. A no-nonsense leader, Paula was extremely strategic and successful. Camille knew she could learn so much from a dynamic woman. So, she introduced herself at a journalism conference. It was shortly thereafter that Paula gladly agreed to be her mentor.

The first thing Paula taught Camille was how to “zero base budget.” That was the beginning of a long and ongoing relationship between Camille Edwards and Paula Madison. Camille knows she can call on Paula for sound advice, whether it be personal or professional. Paula can dissect an issue with ease and clarity. Her advice is always delivered succinctly and without emotion. That type of focus allows Paula to provide the best course to take.

Camille Edwards will forever be indebted to Paula for her sound counsel over the years.
